Further along in the interview (not shown here) Ben is talking about what he feels is the *real* reason women don't get into engineering ("men like machines, women like people") ... I just had to come here and disagree with him and let the world know that the real reason is probably the constant bombardment of messages telling us that women's brains are different, and aren't as good at maths & science as men's brains. That was certainly the message for me growing up (and I'm not even that old). "Women are better at X and men are better at Y". So for that reason I didn't try very hard at science when I was at school, because I assumed I was too stupid. Ben is reinforcing that very outdated message. You gotta be careful what you tell kids. EDIT: Just wanted to add, that way of thinking stopped me from studying electronics, even though it's something I'm really interested in. I was worried I'd waste my money on a diploma I won't be any good at. I studied teaching instead and completely hated it.

this is actually crazy. when i was in elementary school, we had the opportunity to qualify for a program called GATE. Gifted and Talented Education. This program allowed us access to after school classes based on science and math. If the intention is to offer this to all students than it is a plus. If they scrap it in totality then students will miss out on being rewarded for academic excellence.

Get rid of gifted program? Bruh being in gifted classes was a blessing and a curse at the same time. Blessing because obviously you’re naturally smarter and get more attention, only until my senior year I had a regular mainstream class instead of gifted or AP and it was wayyyyy too easy. It was a curse because people put you on a pedestal all your life and parents and other adults pressure you, many of us that were in gifted programs underperform and just are burnt out as adults. Idk it’s hard to explain

I'm so torn on this issue Ben is speaking of...on the one hand, I absolutely agree with how California is handling this situation but, on the other hand, we should reward kids who are gifted in academia. Personally, if I had to analogize about kids being gifted in school, we should look at it like a sport. Now, we wouldn't talk down and not reward a kid who is naturally gifted at their sport and it would be absurd to discriminate a kid who is gifted at that sport (in this case it is school). Is that such a radical idea?

@Snaglebeast One of the problems I find with it is that people are framing this as "don't get rid of tests because we need tests as a metric for academic performance" and while I'm fine with that, it is ignoring the nuance of how exactly we're going to test people in the first place. As it stands now in California at least standardized testing and things like the GRE subject tests are not reliable indicators of someone's intelligence. Tests aren't inherently the problem, but it's the way the tests are done that is the problem at least in my eyes. We need alternative ways of testing as opposed to just getting rid of testing in general. And even if we all agree on that point, it still raises the question of "well how do we test people then?"

Dag geleden
Snaglebeast
Snaglebeast

Now Im not completely aware of how California is handling it. Its mostly lowering the bar for everybody right? If Im correct, in what ways do you agree with it? If Im not correct could you explain what theyre doing and what you agree with? Because if its effectively lowering the bar for everybody how does that help? Shouldnt we want children of all races to be smarter? If we lower the bar now, whats stopping it from be further lowered in the next 5 or 10 years? Our education is already behind many other countries. Im not trying to attack you or anybody else. Im just trying to understand, because Im concerned about how we're falling behind education wise and things like this seem incredibly counter productive.

The simplest explanation is not everyone has an interest in math and won’t take to it. I was never good at math, behind most of my class but I was great with History and Anatomy because that was where my interests lie. I had stretches of time where I would try at math and my grades would sky rocket but always eventually plummet again because I just didn’t care, it didn’t interest me. Not everyone is going to try and you can’t force them too either.

We need to STOP tracking students by race. That just reinforces the idea of race, racial division, and racial segregation. There are many things wrong with education. It first start at home, that is one of the biggest problems. Some students need more support because it isn't there at home, and sometimes it can't be because the parent is working. We keep lowering the bar, and our society is going to turn to crap. I am a teacher, and I also have worked in private industry, and still do. I see the results of what we are doing and allowing in the real world. New York City wants GT students mixed in with on-level students. Combining students of different abilities does NOT work. It will hold them back. Stuff like this confirms for the right that the left is moving us toward real socialism.

I honestly hate when people like Ben and Joe talk about subjects that they don’t know anything about. It is well known within the social sciences that your environment (whether you’re born with low income or high income parents) plays a huge role in your academic success and IQ. A large part of the black and Hispanic community grow up in a working class environment which gives them a huge disadvantage when it comes to academics. This is sociology and psychology 101! How does Ben not know this? Leave the decisions about our education to people who do research in the field and work in education, not political commentators like Ben who either hasn’t read a basic psychology textbook or willfully chooses to ignore it

6 dagen geleden
Doge man
Doge man

@bnasty267 I was simplifying my argument. Of focurse the high income is simply a correlation an like you said, the quality of the education, better nutrition , lower stress levels, etc etc. all contribute to the development of a higher IQ in people who grew up in a more affluent environmnet. IQ does have a genetic component, but environment plays a huge factor as well, and new research is finding more and more evidence of this factor. I was reading a Human Development textbook and in the Intelligence section, it noted that new research done with twins has shown that foster children with "low IQ biological parents" when adopted by high income parents had much higher IQs than the biological parents. It is well known that early childhood development plays a mjaor role in IQ. Yet, much more research is still being done. Also, we are in a knowledge based economogy. This is why many people in education are desperate to improve education for low income groups, because if they dont get tertiary education, they are going to be left behind even more than they already are. it's not just that poor people need "to study more" the issue is much more complex than that.

5 dagen geleden
bnasty267
bnasty267

It's not high income vs low income, it's more tied to the parents' level of education and their conveying of good habits and teaching at home. Of course, parents with higher levels of education tend to be more successful, so there's tons of confounding factors here. IQ also has a large genetic component, so those successful (and likely higher IQ) parents also result in higher IQ kids through simple genetics. The real question is, what do you propose be done about environmental factors in academic success? It's well established that having an intact family with at least 2 parental figures makes a huge difference, but I don't see how 'education decisions' can help there.

Science deniers. It's so clear even in kids which talents kids have and which they don't. Everyone knows in school even when kids are only 10-12 who is doing well at match or sports or art or music or science. That doesn't mean that the kids who don't seem talented in one thing aren't or will never do well, but it does tell you the kids who do well are talented. Even just general school performance. I was very clearly a quicker learner than most kids in my primary school. Very happy I could go to a middle school segregated along learning abilities

The raw truth is that people are not created equal. Some people are naturally better athletes and or smarter than others. However, with hard work, one is able to improve themselves in specific areas to the point where natural ability shouldn't dictate their future unless their goal is to be one of the best. Hard working average people trump lazy gifted people, but there is a point where there isn't enough time in the day for an average person to excel above a gifted person who also works hard.

I know this won't be seen, but I'm a data scientist. Though Shapiro makes a good point about specific data-points eliminating discrimination, it doesn't follow in the issue in the video. In fact, the point is that the tests are not equitable because of the busy lives of the economically disparaged, as they cannot study. Specificity distorts errors even more, as precision increases the weight of deviance from the average, but if the average is practically impossible to find, you can't design a more specific equilibrium. Mr. Shapiro, if people could theoretically just design better tests to tell who gets in better, then what do people do at education ministries?

This is the first time I am learning about this Cali nonsense. Math is used to calculate tolerances in minute instruments cause it is so objective. I fail to see where the laws of physics will ever care about your feelings when it comes to shit like keeping a plane in the air or gases in pipes and the list goes on and on. Math wasn't invented nor created it is measured obvservations of related rates aka calculus and how it came about. This has to be for some lower grades not high school surely. I cannot think of any college dumb enough to have this as thier new philosophy.

I like how this has 1.3k dislikes for the truth. You aren’t fixing the gap, you are calling people idiots based on racial groups. It would be 1 thing if the internet wasn’t widely available to a 3/4ths of Americans. So if you have acces to the internet you can basically learn anything given the drive and want to improve. I’ve fixed my car and gotten keys out of locked cars in just 30 minutes of effort and online videos. You can learn more in online algebra than in person easily if your teachers incompetent so in no way where a mass of students have access to some form of internet should standards be different. Weight classes are a thing, gender classes are a thing, brain classes based on race are not a thing. Pretending people of certain races aren’t good enough is horrid. I had friends that very much struggled both with effort/life/schooling ability that worked very hard to pass classes that I breezed by in. I then struggled massively in my first college semester but I didn’t ask for the college to curve my brain level. Nah I retook the class with a good teacher and got an A. That’s what life’s about struggle and overcoming. If you think handouts and special treatment will get you through life you have a broken viewpoint on the world.
